Position Summary:
The Saw Operator is responsible for accurately cutting structural steel, tube, pipe, plate, and miscellaneous materials used in the fabrication of steel stairs, handrails, guardrails, and ornamental rail systems. This position ensures materials are cut to specification, properly identified, and prepared for fabrication while maintaining quality, safety, and production standards.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate band saws, cold saws, and other cutting equipment safely and efficiently. 
  • Read and interpret shop drawings, cut lists, work orders, and fabrication prints. 
  • Measure, mark, and cut steel materials to precise dimensions and tolerances. 
  • Verify material type, size, and quantity before processing. 
  • Maintain proper identification and traceability of materials throughout production. 
  • Inspect cut materials for accuracy and quality before releasing to fabrication. 
  • Load, unload, and move materials using forklifts, cranes, hoists, and other material handling equipment. 
  • Perform routine equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance. 
  • Monitor blade condition and replace saw blades as needed. 
  • Maintain production records and report material shortages, defects, or equipment issues. 
  • Keep work area organized, clean, and free of safety hazards. 
  • Assist fabrication personnel and support production schedules as needed. 
  • Follow all company safety policies, quality standards, and operating procedures. 

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred. 
  • Previous experience operating industrial saws in a steel fabrication or manufacturing environment preferred. 
  • Ability to read tape measures accurately to 1/16 inch or finer. 
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and cut lists. 
  • Basic knowledge of structural steel shapes, tubing, pipe, and plate materials. 
  • Experience operating forklifts and overhead cranes preferred. 
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Proficient computer skills required, including importing and managing cut files, verifying program information, and operating the Bend-Tech Dragon CNC plasma cutting system.  *This can be trained.*

Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds. 
  • Stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the workday. 
  • Work in a fabrication shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, heat, and moving equipment. 
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
